What is Homoeopathy?
Homoeopathy literally means “like suffering”, referring to the most basic principle of homoeopathic medicine – “Cure like with like”. It was invented over 200 years ago by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who had become disillusioned with the medical practices of the time – mostly application of mercury and arsenic, leeches and cupping. Its basic principles have stood the test of time, and remain unchanged since then. Homoeopathy is taught in Medical Universities to orthodox doctors in many parts of the world, including India, Holland, Germany, France and England. The British Royal Family has been under the care of homoeopathic doctors since the 19th century.
What are the Principles of Homoeopathy?
The Law of Similars is the defining principle of homoeopathic medicine. It states that in order for a substance to cure a sick person, it must be able to produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. For example, a remedy is made from the onion to cure some forms of hay fever, since the raw onion produces excessive production from the eyes and nose. In orthodox medicine, radiation is used to treat cancer, and amphetamines are used to treat hyperkinetic syndrome (hyperactivity).
The Law of the Minimum Dose states that only the least amount of medicine necessary to cause a change in a person’s health should be used. A homoeopath may prescribe only a single dose (1 pill or even 1 drop) and wait several weeks to see the reaction. This reaction may be a complete cure.
The Law of the Single Remedy states that only one medicine should be used at any one time and its effects measured before administering another remedy. This allows clear scientific assessment of the treatment.
The Law of the Direction of Cure is a very important principle to the homoeopathic practitioner, for it allows him to measure the actual improvement of the patient. The body has a natural hierarchy, disease moving from less important organs to more important, so cure should take place in the opposite direction. This direction also involves Time, so the old symptoms may return and disappear, as the person travels back to a point in their life when they were healthier. Old symptoms returning is considered an excellent sign
The Philosophy of Homoeopathy
1. Disease affects all levels of a person – mind, heart and body. Cure must also affect these levels.
2. Disease can start with something non-physical such as an emotional trauma, and eventually affect the body.
3. Treating the part affected does not affect the whole. While the whole is sick, the parts will never be well.
4. The body remembers everything that happens to it.
5. Disease is an evolution, often from birth. Symptoms that occurred in the past are connected to the present.
6. Symptoms are the body’s attempt to relieve and survive disease. Suppression hampers survival.
7. Disease can only be cured by increasing your health. There is no magic bullet.
8. Every case is unique and individual.
There are no shortcuts.
9. Everything the body does has a purpose and is needed.
The body knows what it is doing.
10. Health should bring Happiness, Peace of mind, increased creativity.
Without these, a person is not yet healthy.
Homoeopathy has particular strengths when dealing with :
- Emotional problems (Grief that has never been resolved, PHOBIAS! , uncontrollable anger and tantrums as examples)
- Addiction problems (We tackle both the underlying reasons and the physical damage)
- Inherited conditions (homoeopathy is especially useful where there is a strong family history, say of respiratory illness, heart disease, cancer)
- Mental problems (Poor memory, Obsessions and compulsions, Strange beliefs and mental patterns)
- Treatment of Children (Medicines are non-toxic, tasteless, and simple to use with no side effects)
- Sleep problems (Nightmares or exhausting dreams, various forms of Insomnia, Sleep walking and talking)
- Pain management (Especially where painkillers are not effective but even the most intense forms of chronic pain can be reduced or eliminated)
- Hormonal imbalances (Endometriosis, Painful periods, Absence of periods, Heavy bleeding and clotting, Low libido in men and women, all types of sexual dysfunctions)
